How Infant Feeding Response Works
Infant Feeding Response (IFR) provides urgent infant feeding and lactation support via telehealth for times when feeding feels suddenly difficult, painful, or worrying.
The service is designed to offer timely, calm, professional support, particularly during evenings and out-of-hours, when access to in-person care may be limited.
Evidence supporting telehealth lactation support
Telehealth infant feeding support is supported by systematic reviews and meta-analyses, which have shown that video-based lactation consultations can be effective, particularly when timely access to in-person care is limited.
Infant Feeding Response uses telehealth where clinically appropriate and alongside clear clinical triage to ensure care remains safe and evidence-based.
Step 1 — Book an urgent online consultation
Appointments are booked online and may be available same day, including evenings.
IFR may be appropriate if:
Feeding has suddenly changed or become painful
Your baby seems unsettled or feeding differently
You feel unsure whether your concerns are normal
You need professional guidance now, not weeks away
Booking is straightforward, with confirmation and access details provided immediately.
Step 2 — A calm, midwife-led telehealth appointment
Consultations take place via secure video call and are midwife-led, evidence-based, and focused.
During the appointment we will:
Discuss what is happening right now
Assess feeding, infant behaviour, and parental wellbeing
Offer practical, realistic feeding guidance
Appointments are unhurried and designed to reduce overwhelm.
Step 3 — Clinical triage and safety-first care
Every Infant Feeding Response appointment includes clinical triage.
This ensures feeding concerns are assessed to determine:
What can be safely supported via telehealth
When further assessment or escalation is needed
If concerns fall outside the scope of infant feeding and lactation support, this will be explained clearly and you will be supported to access the appropriate service. This may include signposting to:
GP or community services
Maternity or neonatal care
Urgent or emergency services
Specialist support
Infant Feeding Response does not replace medical or emergency care.
Safety is always the priority.
Step 4 — Clear guidance and next steps
Following your consultation, you will receive:
Clear verbal guidance during the appointment
A written summary and care plan
Practical steps for the next 24–48 hours
Clear advice on when and where to seek further help
You should leave knowing what is most likely happening, what to do now, and what to watch for.
Who provides Infant Feeding Response?
Infant Feeding Response is delivered by a registered midwife and IBCLC Exam Candidate, providing infant feeding and lactation support within professional scope, evidence-based practice, and clear clinical boundaries.
Support is calm, non-judgemental, and centred on helping families feel safe and supported during vulnerable moments.
How IFR fits alongside your care
IFR is designed to complement existing healthcare services, not replace them.
Families may use the service:
While waiting for in-person appointments
To help decide whether further care is needed
For urgent reassurance outside usual hours
To stabilise feeding concerns and plan next steps
